Johnson Controls to acquire Alloy Enterprises

Johnson Controls to acquire Alloy Enterprises for strategic growth. The acquisition enhances Johnson Controls’ position in data centre cooling, integrating Alloy’s liquid cooling technology to boost thermal management efficiency. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to advanced cooling solutions in mission-critical applications.

Johnson Controls, a leader in energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies, has announced its intent to acquire Alloy Enterprises, a Boston-based specialist in next-generation thermal management for high-performance data centres. This strategic acquisition aims to bolster Johnson Controls’ capabilities in the rapidly growing data centre cooling sector.

Alloy Enterprises, founded in 2020, has developed a proprietary platform focused on advanced direct liquid cooling components. These innovations claim to improve thermal management efficiency by up to 35%, enabling faster heat removal and reducing pressure drop by up to 75%. This results in significantly lower energy consumption for cooling systems.

Lei Schlitz, Vice President and President of Global Products & Solutions at Johnson Controls, stated, “This acquisition is about enabling our customers to stay ahead of fast-changing compute demands by adding another core technology that enables us to optimise the overall thermal management architecture of a data centre. It will also strengthen our core technology capabilities that can scale across the Johnson Controls portfolio and reinforces our long-term commitment to lead more broadly in advanced thermal management solutions for mission-critical applications.”

The acquisition complements Johnson Controls’ comprehensive thermal management portfolio, which includes the YDAM magnetic bearing chiller, the YK-HT two-stage economised centrifugal chiller, the Silent-Aire Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU), and the YHAU absorption chillers. These technologies collectively enhance the company’s ability to deliver highly efficient and differentiated cooling solutions.

Alison Forsyth, Co-founder and CEO of Alloy Enterprises, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We’re excited to join Johnson Controls and accelerate the impact of our unique technology. We’ll continue to work closely to solve the industry’s most urgent challenges in data centres and other mission-critical environments.”

The move aligns with Johnson Controls’ ambition to lead in advanced thermal management solutions, providing scalable, integrated technologies that meet the evolving demands of data centres.
