Italgas has entered a service contract to manage the natural gas distribution business in the La Spezia area of Italy over the next 12 years.
The La Spezia area, surrounding the port city in the Liguria region approximately mid way between Genoa and Pisa, comprises 33 municipalities with over 111,000 customers served.
As part of the 12-year concession, Italgas plans to invest over €230 million in the region in smartening and digitalising the network to support the process of decarbonising gas consumption.
“The renewed relationship with the La Spezia area allows us to accelerate the ecological transition path towards a decarbonised economy,” said Pier Lorenzo Dell’Orco, CEO of Italgas Reti.
“We aim to consolidate the network to make it increasingly intelligent, widespread and resilient so as to allow it to accommodate increasing shares of renewable gases such as biomethane, hydrogen and synthetic methane. In this way, we are bringing the goal of net zero closer.”

He adds that the company’s vision of energy passes through an interconnected, multi-gas and remotely controlled network, capable of guaranteeing an increasingly efficient, safe and sustainable service.
“This future is already a reality for La Spezia as well.”
The investment plan includes laying around 400km of new pipelines and upgrading over 40km of network to reach areas not yet served, benefiting around 9,000 new customers.
In addition, 100km of networks are due for modernisation and over 400 intermediate plants are planned to be equipped with monitoring and remote control systems.
It is also planned to complete the process of replacing traditional meters with the latest generation smart meters so that all customers in the area are equipped with them.
Italgas Reti is the group’s gas distribution operator and concessionaire in over 1,600 municipalities across Italy.
