Dublin-based TSO EirGrid has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with TU Dublin Enterprise Academy to collaboratively design accredited talent development solutions aimed at upskilling EirGrid’s workforce.

The collaboration will support EirGrid’s objectives to develop internal expertise, facilitate knowledge-sharing, equip highly skilled employees with teaching tools, and build scalable training programmes to expand critical skillsets.

The collaboration will leverage the expertise of both organisations to address critical skill gaps and foster innovation within the energy sector.

EirGrid is a state-owned company that operates, maintains and develops the electricity transmission system in Ireland. The company is responsible for a safe, secure, and reliable electricity supply, and for driving the transition to a low-carbon future.

As the integration of renewable energy sources increases the complexity of grid systems, EirGrid faces a growing need for enhanced technical and operational skills within its expanding workforce.

The collaboration comes as upskilling the workforce proves a critical challenge for Europe’s energy sector.

According to an industry report released in March by Enlit, the current labour force available to enable Europe’s energy transition is dwindling and is a leading cause for concern for industry professionals.

The report, based on the findings of an industry survey and think tank conducted at Enlit Europe in 2024, shows that a fast-paced workforce transition is taking place, causing an increased need for labour and a simultaneous (and concerning) decrease in the labour pool from which to draw.

The TU Dublin Enterprise Academy works with enterprises across sectors to create flexible, scalable, and accredited solutions to meet the current and emerging skills needs of its industry partners.

The Enterprise Academy specialises in co-designing organisation, industry, or function-specific learning solutions, recognising and accrediting existing industry programmes through collaborative provision, and bridging on-campus learners with enterprise faculty for live challenges and guest lectures.
