IoT aiding beer brewer Carlsberg with sales and maintenance
The Danish brewing giant Carlsberg has embraced IoT technology to gain instantaneous insights into draught beer sales and receive early warnings of technical issues. This move is partly in response to the ongoing phase-out of 2G and 3G networks across Europe, which impacts existing systems in pubs and bars continent-wide.
Carlsberg Group is set to roll out its innovative Digital DraughtMaster across ten countries from 2024. The deployment will utilise the network services of IoT connectivity expert Onomondo, enabling Carlsberg to access over 630 networks in more than 180 countries through Onomondo’s Network Marketplace.
In addition, Carlsberg will utilise Onomondo Connectors to securely transfer data from the Digital DraughtMaster to their AWS Cloud setup. These connectors enhance data security by bypassing the need for intermediate servers, protecting against data interception. They have also facilitated a 30% reduction in data transmission for Carlsberg, thus reducing costs over the lifespan of the device. Onomondo’s software further allows for remote troubleshooting by Carlsberg, minimising downtime.
The Digital DraughtMaster’s predictive maintenance capabilities, combined with Onomondo’s software, enable proactive problem-solving, preventing potential issues from interrupting beer supply.
Henrik Aagaard, Co-founder and CTO of Onomondo, said: “Our goal at Onomondo has always been to provide a global, simplified, and unified network that offers optimal coverage for IoT solutions. Collaborating with Carlsberg has allowed us to develop a solution that operates effectively wherever their beer is consumed. This adaptability is crucial, especially with the global phase-out of 2G and 3G standards, to ensure the network and devices remain relevant and future-proof.”
Gregory Thomas, Senior Director at Carlsberg in charge of DraughtMaster, shared insights on the partnership: “Before partnering with Onomondo, we faced three major challenges for our DraughtMaster system: global device operation, secure data transmission to cloud environments, and consistent connectivity and functionality. Normally, addressing these would require multiple service providers. However, incorporating Onomondo’s IoT SIMs and core network into our system solves these issues comprehensively. Onomondo offers a straightforward, dependable, and efficient solution to the common connectivity challenges in IoT projects.”
