Prysmian Group’s new cable-laying vessel Monna Lisa, built by Vard, has been equipped with Ingeteam’s Ingedrive LV800 converters for its propulsion and maneuvering systems.

The 171m vessel can install cables in water depths beyond 3,000m and carry up to 17,000 metric tons of cable on two carousels. It can accommodate 120 people and has a bollard pull of about about 200 metric tons.

The Ingedrive LV800 drives control propulsion, thrusters and other electrical systems, providing precise control of speed and torque needed for DP3 dynamic positioning during cable-laying operations. They maintain power stability during voltage drops or failures and help keep the vessel on station.

The system integrates with biodiesel generators, batteries and shore power connections to cut emissions during operation and while in port. The converters also help maintain stable power for automation and navigation equipment.

According to Ingeteam, another feature of the system is its robustness. The converters “resist vibrations, temperature variations, corrosion and extreme charge/discharge cycles”, the company says, which makes it suitable for extreme marine environments. It also features modular integration, which facilitates maintenance, monitoring and disaster recovery.

Built in Romania and completed in Norway, Monna Lisa was delivered in February 2025.

Ingeteam equipment:

  • Converters for main propulsions 1 & 3: Ingedrive LV800, 12-pulse DFE, 3,200kW, 660V;
  • Converters for main Propulsion 2: Ingedrive LV800, dual AFE, 3,200kW, 660V (redundant);
  • Converters for tunnel thrusters (2): Ingedrive LV800, 12-pulse DFE, 2,450kW, 660V
  • Converters for retractable thrusters (2): Ingedrive LV800, AFE + DC/DC, 2500kW, 690V (hybrid with batteries).
