India’s RMC Switchgears wins $6.8m smart meter enclosures order

India-based RMC Switchgears, a provider of electrical systems and infrastructure solutions, has been awarded a contract to supply SMC Meter Enclosures for Smart Meters by an Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP).
The contract, valued at approximately ₹56.68 crores ($6.8 million), includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, integration, testing, inspection, packing, supply, transportation and insurance of SMC Boxes for Three Phase LT CT – Consumer & DT Meter.
The projects are for PVVNL (Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited) and MVVNL (Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited), two power distribution companies in India.
According to RMC in a release, AMISPs are pivotal in the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) programme in India as they play a crucial role in thedeploying smart metering solutions that are central to modernising the country’s power distribution sector.

RMC calls itself the first to design and bring special meter enclosures and panels in India. Their enclosures had integrated wiring and data concentrator units (DCUs) that, with over 25 million energy meter enclosures delivered pan India, they state, proved to be most effective and efficient.
Commenting in a release was Ankit Agrawal, CEO and whole-time director of RMC Switchgears: “We are excited to secure this significant contract for the supply of SMC Meter Enclosures for Smart Meters for PVVNL and MVVNL projects.
“This highlights our capability in handling large-scale, complex projects relating to the RDSS programmes, and aligns perfectly with our strategic vision of expanding our footprint in smart metering solutions.
“Given the Government’s push for a nationwide smart grid and improved energy management systems, contracts of this nature have the potential to repeat as more DISCOMs look to upgrade their infrastructure.”
RMC adds that the contract aligns with the company’s strategic vision of expanding their market presence and enhancing product offerings in smart metering solutions as an outcome of India‘s RDSS, which aims to enhance the efficiencies and financial sustainability of DISCOMs through advanced technologies.
Both PVVNL and MVVNL operate in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
PVVNL’s areas of supply include District Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Gautambudh Nagar, Bulandshahar, Hapur, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Shamli, Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal, J.P. Nagar and Rampur.
MVVNL’s area of supply includes Budaun, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur, Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Bahraich, Shrawasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Barabanki, Rae Bareli, Ayodhya, Sultanpur, Ambedkarnagar, Lucknow and Amethi.
