A central England hospital has embarked on a significant infrastructure upgrade, necessitating an effective temporary cooling solution to maintain service continuity. ICS Cool Energy was enlisted to deliver a robust system, essential for sustaining healthcare operations during the summer months of improvement works. This initiative aimed to preserve system redundancy and minimise operational risks.
The hospital’s infrastructure programme required both chillers to operate simultaneously, temporarily removing built-in redundancy and increasing system strain. With summer temperatures rising, a reliable cooling solution became imperative to ensure the continuation of services across critical clinical spaces, including operating theatres and wards. ICS Cool Energy was tasked to provide a temporary hire chiller system as part of an integrated approach.
ICS Cool Energy designed and deployed a comprehensive temporary cooling system, capable of assuming the hospital’s full cooling load. The installation included four 500kW chillers and two 800kVA generators to address site power limitations. Engineers navigated logistical challenges, such as routing flexible hoses to the rooftop plant room and deploying equipment without disrupting hospital operations. A crane was used to position equipment due to access restrictions.
The engineering team accounted for pressure drops across extensive pipework, integrating the hospital’s main pumps into the temporary setup. Additional pumps were installed to maintain optimal flow and pressure, ensuring efficient cooling performance throughout the facility.
The temporary solution enabled the hospital to maintain appropriate temperatures during peak summer heat, with ICS Cool Energy managing the installation process efficiently. The project ensured uninterrupted hospital operations, safeguarding clinical environments amid seasonal heat and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
