Finnish shipping company Meriaura Group says it has begun the preparation and design of a marine transport concept that aims to achieve 100% carbon neutrality.

It will be based on a hybrid propulsion system combining sustainably produced bio-oil and battery technology. “Meriaura Group’s goal is to launch in 2024 the first transportation concept based on renewable energy since the era of large sailing ships,” said Jussi Mälkiä, president of Meriaura Group.

Details of the propulsion system specification and the commercial operating model are still under development, but the company says that the concept is designed specifically for lake, canal and sea feeder traffic, with a plan to pilot it on Finland’s Lake Saimaa.

“Lake Saimaa is a perfect pilot area for our concept. The region’s strong and progressive industry needs a clear transport route, which will be made possible by the extension of the canal locks. In the future, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly transport chain is needed to ensure the vitality of the Saimaa region,” noted Mälkiä.
