Hexagon launches wireless HYPERSCAN SR inspection scanner

Hexagon has introduced a wireless scanner for industrial component inspection. HYPERSCAN SR uses dynamic optical tracking, built-in batteries and Wi-Fi 6, with global commercial availability from 12 October.

Hexagon has launched HYPERSCAN SR, a wireless optical-tracking 3D scanner for inspecting industrial components on factory floors, at supplier sites and in the field. Introduced on 12 October 2026 by the company’s Portable Metrology Division in Cobham, UK, the system is available globally through Hexagon and its resellers.

The handheld scanner works with an external tracker that follows the scanner and the component within a shared coordinate system. This dynamic referencing maintains their relative positions as the workpiece moves or the surrounding setup vibrates, allowing inspection data to be collected without requiring the part to remain completely stationary. It is particularly suited to components that are inconvenient to move into a dedicated measurement room.

Both the scanner and tracker have integrated Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and swappable batteries, removing the cables and separate wireless accessory associated with some externally tracked systems. Hexagon says this reduces preparation for measurements in limited-access or power-limited areas. It has not quantified the setup time saved.

HYPERSCAN SR supports target-free, wide-area scanning of smaller and medium-sized parts, including welded machine frames, cast housings, tooling, fixtures and vehicle interiors. Multiple scanning modes offer edge detection and hole flash capture alongside surface measurement. Hexagon specifies a maximum acquisition rate of four million points per second. The handheld unit weighs 1.3kg excluding its battery and includes on-device controls and voice-assistant support.

Captured point clouds can be exported in STL and other common formats, with one-click transfer to Geomagic or PolyWorks. That allows scanned geometry to be taken into established inspection software for dimensional comparison and evaluation. Hexagon identifies incoming-goods inspection, field service, maintenance and overhaul, and tooling checks as intended applications.

Hexagon states that the scanner is calibrated in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, with measurement data certified to VDI/VDE 2634-3. Its published volumetric accuracy starts at 0.06mm over 3.2m; this is a manufacturer specification linked to stated measurement conditions, rather than a universal accuracy guarantee for every working environment.

The SR joins HYPERSCAN Ultra and Super as the entry model in the product family. All three share a workflow and coordinate system, while a standardised integrator kit is available to connect the SR to robotic automation.
