Chemical and consumer goods giant Henkel has introduced Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, the first cold seal solution specifically engineered for barrier-coated paper packaging. This development addresses a significant technical challenge in the industry’s transition away from plastic.
With global brands increasingly adopting paperisation strategies to meet sustainability targets, the market has faced a shortage of high-performance sealing options for paper treated with protective barriers. Henkel’s new solution provides a secure seal for heat-sensitive products — such as chocolate, snacks, and ice cream — without compromising the barrier properties of the paper substrate.
For manufacturers, Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE offers the advantage of running on existing high-speed production lines without the need for thermal exposure. Its technical benefits include aroma and quality preservation, process stability, and ease of recycling. By sealing without heat, the packaging’s mechanical stress is reduced, maintaining the sensory integrity of the contents. The coating is press-ready, sustaining a consistent seal even at high speeds, and is verified as compatible with mechanical paper recycling, allowing the structure to re-enter the circular economy.
The launch coincides with the industry’s preparation for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which enforces stricter recyclability standards. With over 70% of global consumers prioritising recyclable packaging, this solution enables brand owners to replace plastic secondary packaging with functional, circular paper alternatives.
“With Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, Henkel delivers attested cold seal performance on barrier-coated paper and, consequently, packaging solutions that meet the requirements for a circular economy,” says Cagri Turkmen, market strategy manager flexible packaging at Henkel. “This complete material recirculation creates a solid basis for meeting future regulatory requirements and implementing high-performance, ready-to-market packaging designs.”
As the industry advances towards more sustainable practices, solutions like Henkel’s are pivotal in achieving regulatory compliance and consumer satisfaction in recyclable packaging.
