Helix, the trading name of Integral Powertrain Ltd, has joined forces with McMurtry Automotive to redefine the landscape of electric hypercars. Known for producing the world’s most power-dense electric motors and inverters, Helix is now contributing its expertise to the McMurtry Spéirling Pure Electric Fan Hypercar.
Leveraging over two decades of experience in high-performance electric drive systems, Helix has engineered a bespoke drive motor system for the Spéirling. This system, featuring two Helix SPX242-94 motors at the rear, delivers an impressive 1,000hp. The integration of this propulsion system with McMurtry’s proprietary Downforce-on-Demand™ fan system sets a new benchmark in automotive performance.
The Spéirling’s capabilities are nothing short of extraordinary. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 1.5 seconds and covers a quarter mile in 8 seconds. These feats have been demonstrated with record-breaking performances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Laguna Seca Hill climb, as well as setting the fastest-ever lap at the Top Gear test track.
The Helix electric motors are confirmed for the production version of the McMurtry Spéirling PURE, with initial customer deliveries projected for 2026. The SPX242-94 motors, developed from Helix’s scalable core technology, are among the most powerful motors ever produced by the company. Each unit offers 500Nm of torque, packaged in an ultra-lightweight 33kg unit, opening new possibilities in automotive design for the Spéirling’s compact, single-seater layout.
Building on the success of the Spéirling programme, McMurtry Technology has launched a new division to offer OEMs access to its proven technologies. This includes Fan Downforce Systems, high-performance batteries, and E-Axles, designed to enhance performance and safety in various applications.
Simon Mead, Automotive Chief Engineer at Helix, remarked, “The McMurtry Spéirling is an exceptional example of British engineering and demonstrates one of the most effective applications of advanced electric motor technology. We are proud to have been involved in its journey from an early stage, with Helix drive motor propulsion systems featuring throughout the evolution of this groundbreaking hypercar, from prototype to production. The partnership between Helix and McMurtry reflects our passion for pushing boundaries and driving the advancement of next-generation propulsion systems.”
Helix has deep roots in motorsport, with its motors, inverters, and electric propulsion units well-established in Formula E and other racing series. Beyond motorsport, Helix’s technology powers hypercars such as the Aston Martin Valkyrie, Lotus Evija, and Czinger 21C. The company’s systems are increasingly pivotal in the electrification efforts of industries like aerospace, defence, and marine, partnering with entities involved in vertical take-off and landing vehicles, space launch providers, and defence platforms across land, sea, and air.
