Neugemacht has been formed as a JV by Gridspertise and Cuculus to deliver end-to-end metering services to municipal utilities, metering point operators and real estate companies in the German market.

The JV, of which Gridspsertise holds 51% and Cuculus 49%, is aimed to accelerate the digitalisation of Germany’s electricity grids, according to a statement on the deal.

Solutions offered include all necessary components, such as meters, smart meter gateways, communication, a software platform, system integration, installation services and operation to offer a turn-key metering-as-a-service.

With this, smart metering solutions are extended beyond the basic metering point operator in addition to a complete offering for competitive metering point operators in the market.

Robert Denda, CEO of Gridspertise, says the company leverages more than 20 years of knowledge and field experience in the development of smart metering solutions in several geographies.

“By offering end-to-end metering solutions, our joint venture Neugemacht can really bring speed in the implementation of the German smart meter rollout and enable the active participation of customers in the energy transition.”

René Böringer, CEO of Cuculus, says the partnership is the right setup to enter the German market at the right time and the necessary scale.

“We have always been here but so far, the market didn’t need our expertise on very large, scalable and flexible systems yet. The answer lies in a complete end-to-end-offering of a flexible and future-oriented supply and management system which is also ready to break the sector boundaries. This is what neugemacht stands for.”

Gridspertise headquartered in Milan, Italy was formed as a metering and digital solution provider out of Enel and has a growing portfolio of smart metering and other products.

Cuculus headquartered in Ilmenau, Germany, is a specialist in software for the utility sector and in areas such as meter data management.

The Neugemacht brand was announced in May, with the jv considered timely with the recent German government law to restart the digitalisation of the energy transition and accelerate the rollout of smart metering with binding targets until 2028.

The company will be headquartered in Frankfurt.
