Electricity North West’s 2.5 million smart meters in northwest England are to be migrated onto meter data innovator Procode’s intelligent meter adapter.

The agreement, which runs for a minimum of five years, should see Electricity North West’s smart meter estate seamlessly migrated to the intelligent data adapter starting in November.

With this Electricity North West should obtain a comprehensive overview of its smart meter estate, enabling improvements in customer service and business operations.

“We are the most digitised distribution network operator. We adopt digital processes to make us more efficient and improve customer service,” says Paul Killilea, Electricity North West Asset and Investment director.

“Procode’s intelligent data adapter gives us a state-of-the art communication gateway with smart meters that allows us to deliver improved services for customers when managing power outages and making investment decisions supporting low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and solar panels.”

The intelligent data adapter, which is offered as a software as a service, facilitates seamless communication with the Data Communications Company’s national smart meter data network to enable suppliers and others to access their individual data, issue commands to their meters and generate data-based insights.

It is capable of handling thousands of alerts per second, for example enabling better response during storms and prioritising where supply should be restored following outages.

Ian Burgess, MD of Procode, describes the partnership with Electricity North West as an exciting next step for the company.

“We are delighted to be working with Electricity North West to provide even better levels of customer service and maintain their position as a leader in the adoption of cutting-edge tech.”

Procode reports that its systems currently support more than four million smart meters in the UK and the adapter has a vend success rate of more than 99.9%.
