Renewable energy infrastructure investor Excelsior Energy Capital has entered a multiyear agreement with energy storage provider Fluence Energy to develop 2.2GWh of BESS infrastructure in strategic markets across the US.

The projects, which will commence in 2025, will promote North American grid stability and sustainable energy development while supporting domestic manufacturing.

Under the agreement, Excelsior will deploy Fluence’s Gridstack Pro product line to deliver firm capacity and flexible power for the electric grid.

The company will utilise battery cells primarily manufactured in Tennessee along with Fluence battery modules manufactured in Utah, aiming to foster a more robust domestic supply chain for clean tech while supporting battery storage production capacity.

Commenting in a release was Anne Marie Denman, co-founder and partner of Excelsior Energy Capital: “The US grid needs energy storage at scale to support a reliable and clean future, and Excelsior’s commitment to Fluence and domestic manufacturing of batteries is a tangible expression of its efforts to participate in this future.

“The agreement also demonstrates our focused efforts to bring our supply chain for clean critical infrastructure closer to home, both derisking our investments and enhancing local economies.”

Said John Zahurancik, Fluence president for the Americas: “Fluence is proud to support Excelsior on the deployment of 2.2GWh of critical energy storage solutions that will accelerate meaningful US renewable energy infrastructure and strengthen domestic battery storage manufacturing.

“Sourcing battery cells and supply chains in proximity to power demand will improve logistics, reduce project risk, and enhance the sustainability of these investments.”

Said Chris Frantz, partner of Excelsior Energy Capital: “This agreement with Fluence will reduce battery supply risks for our projects, enabling us to fully realize the potential of our BESS investments and support the energy needs of local communities.

“Together, we aim to leverage our combined expertise to drive sustainable growth and innovation in the energy sector.”

The agreement marks the latest development from Fluence in the realm of storage.

In June alone, the Siemens and AES Corporation-owned company announced agreements with MW Storage in Finland and Dispatch in the Netherlands on battery projects. In the same month, the company announced the start of the construction for their grid booster battery project with TransnetBW in Germany.
