FANUC’s ROBOSHOT injection moulding machines are integral to Sovrin Medical Plastics’ operations. The Slough-based manufacturer has amassed 34 ROBOSHOT machines over two decades, producing medical devices with zero unplanned downtime. These machines operate 24/7 for most of the year, with some surpassing 40 million cycles, underscoring their durability.
James Joiner, Managing Director of Sovrin Medical Plastics, remarked on the machines’ consistent performance, stating, “We simply don’t experience downtime with the ROBOSHOT machines.” This reliability is partly attributed to FANUC’s engineering, which includes developing and manufacturing its own OEM parts. Engineering Director Adrian Hill highlighted FANUC’s vertical integration as a key factor in the machines’ high uptime and longevity.
Sovrin’s shift to FANUC’s all-electric technology began in 2005, marking a transition from hydraulic machines. By 2016, Sovrin’s new facility housed 31 all-electric ROBOSHOT machines, reflecting their commitment to clean, energy-efficient production. The recent acquisition of two S250iA machines for the ophthalmic sector demonstrates Sovrin’s ongoing investment in FANUC technology to meet rising demand.
The ROBOSHOT machines’ precision is crucial for Sovrin’s production of safety-critical products, such as surgical instruments and auto injectors. Operating under ISO Class 7 and 8 cleanroom conditions, these machines utilise FANUC’s CNC servo drives for precise control. The Power Regeneration feature further reduces energy consumption, a significant advantage in energy-intensive cleanroom environments.
Adrian Hill commended FANUC’s innovations in energy efficiency, stating, “FANUC has done some very clever stuff on the software side that minimises energy consumption.” Sovrin’s loyalty to the ROBOSHOT brand is a testament to its engineering prowess, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of medical device manufacturing.
