ewl leverages lake Lucerne to heat up Neustadt

Energie Wasser Luzern (ewl) has announced the construction of a new See-Energie line to supply Neustadt with heat, generated with energy from Lake Lucerne.

The construction of ewl’s new line, as part of the See-Energie ecological heating and cooling system, will start at the beginning of May 2022, with the construction site setup and installations taking place in Frankenstrasse.

In the final stage of this expansion, up to 3,700 households in the centre of Lucerne can be supplied with ecological energy, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 5,500 tons a year.

For this purpose, ewl is building the line from the basement of Lucerne train station via Frankenstrasse to Seidenhofstrasse and from Hirschmattstrasse via Viktoriaplatz and Pilatusstrasse.

The forthcoming construction activities will enable ewl to develop See-Energie in the Neustadt area.

It is not yet clear where the district headquarters will be located, which enable the properties to be connected to the lake energy network. ewl is currently evaluating several locations for this.

“With the ongoing expansion of the See-Energie-Netz, ewl wants to use local resources sustainably and consciously and actively contribute to the energy transition in the city of Lucerne,” said Patrik Rust, CEO of ewl, in a statement.

In the final phase, up to 3,700 households in the center of Lucerne can be supplied with energy from the lake. This corresponds to around 30GWh of energy per year.

The first buildings around the train station are already receiving environmentally friendly energy from the lake. The Tribschen district is also currently being developed using See-Energie.
