Energy Web has launched the AutoGreenCharge mobile app to decarbonise electric vehicle charging in beta phase.

AutoGreenCharge, which is secured on the Polkadot blockchain, is aimed to offer EV drivers and fleet owners a simple and verifiable solution to ensure that their vehicle charging is powered with renewable energy.

By integrating renewable energy certificates (RECs), the app automatically matches EV charging sessions with clean energy, providing verifiable green charging in real time.

Mani Hagh Sefat, CTO of Energy Web, says that AutoGreenCharge represents a major step forward in the electrification and decarbonisation of transportation.

“By providing EV owners with a seamless way to ensure their cars are charged with renewable energy, we’re empowering drivers to make more sustainable choices and actively contribute to the global energy transition.”

AutoGreenCharge, through the connected car API platform Smartcar, allows EV drivers to easily connect their vehicles, with the charging data accessed from the car’s maker and sent to the network.

Once connected, the charging sessions are automatically tracked with details of the location, time and amount of electricity charged so that users have insights into their energy consumption and the environmental impact.

As the app evolves toward full production – taking into account user feedback during the beta phase – users should be able to retire real renewable energy certificates with each charging session, with integration into the existing renewable energy registries, i.e. GO, REC and iREC.

Additionally, they will have the option to specify preferences for the type and location of renewable energy, gaining personalised access to solar, wind or other clean energy sources from around the globe.

Through the integration with the Polkadot blockchain, all transactions and certificate retirements are securely recorded and verifiable, in order to enhance transparency and trust in the system.

The app is accessible on the Google Play and Apple Flight stores to owners of popular electric vehicles, including Tesla, BMW, Mercedes and others, bringing the promise of green charging to a worldwide, mainstream audience.
