Enel’s Gridspertise secures contracts to supply over 650,000 smart meters

Gridspertise, a new company established by Italian multinational utility Enel to help accelerate the digitalisation of the energy sector, has bagged contracts that will see the firm supply over 650,000 smart meters and more than 150,000 smart grid accessories.

The contracts have been signed with 12 European distribution system operators (DSOs) with the majority of them being Italian. The other utilities are based in San Marino and Malta.

The DSOs will leverage the smart meters as part of efforts to speed up their grid modernisation initiatives in central and northern Italy. The DSOs include one of Italy’s largest municipal utility HERA Group, Enemalta and Energie Offida.

Gridspertise will supply the smart meters and related infrastructure and technologies through 2029.

The contracts also include the provision of concentrators, field operation devices, antennas for grid connectivity and various equipment that support utilities’ digitalisation of the distribution network.

The projects to leverage the infrastructure are expected to provide utilities with grid automation capabilities that can help improve consumer energy billing and grid efficiency and reliability.

Gridspertise says the projects will help speed up the electrification and sustainability of grid networks.

Robert Denda, CEO of Gridspertise said the deals will enable energy firms to: “accelerate the transformation of their networks with Metering and Grid Edge Digitalisation solutions that integrate the most advanced technologies available today and enable the active participation of different stakeholders in the electricity market. We are fully committed to fulfilling their mission, with the first deliveries already slated to start this year.”

The announcement of the contracts follows Enel itself achieving a milestone of over 1 million prosumers on its grid networks owing to increased digitalisation to achieve energy transition targets.
