Endesa supports new AI research chair at University of Granada

Endesa has signed an agreement with the University of Granada to create a new chair in AI for application in electricity distribution grids.

The new chair, the sixth that Endesa is supporting at Spanish universities in the area of energy innovation, is aimed to focus on research in the application of AI and quantum computing in the distribution grid environment.

The digitalisation of the distribution network and the application of AI and quantum computing technologies are key to overcoming the evolving energy system challenges with the growth of electric vehicles and small scale distributed generation, particularly in high density areas such as cities.

These are expected to be addressed in a pioneering manner in this new chair.

In addition to the transfer of new knowledge between universities and companies that these agreements promote, benefits accrue for training and research at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with Endesa chairs also participating in seminars and courses and supervision of master’s and doctorate projects.

Endesa launched its ‘Energy Innovation chair’ initiative in 2005, with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

Subsequently, further chairs have been established in Spain at the University of the Balearic Islands, the University of Seville, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Zaragoza.

These have focussed on training, research and scientific dissemination on innovations in the electricity sector in diverse areas.

For example, over the past year Endesa chairs are reported to have developed research projects in areas such as grid operation with a high penetration of solar PV, the application of virtual reality in the distribution sector, advanced grid monitoring applications, flexibility service models for the development of carbon-neutral systems and initiatives linked to bird protection.
