Elewit completes multiprong electric network planning project
Spanish tech company Elewit has completed the development of the GridCal and Newton improvement project for Electrical Planning, known as the Siroco project, which they state has represented a significant advancement in the simulation capabilities of electrical networks.
According to Elewit, which is the tech platform for Spanish TSO Red Eléctrica, through the project, new advanced functionalities have been developed that not only satisfy current network needs, but also anticipate future analysis needs of the electrical sector.
According to the company in a release, due to the high complexity of the project, various verticals have been developed with collaborators who have the necessary knowledge and technologies, including:
- Power flow calculation and linear optimisation:
Developer Ingelectus, which creates solutions for the control and improvement of renewable energy production, oversaw implementation of advanced tools for power flow and contingency calculation.

- Optimisation of optimal alternating current power flows (ACOPF):
Developer eRoots, a consultancy and power grid software developer, oversaw development of linear and non-linear optimisation models for fluids such as water, hydrogen and gas, and a new way of modelling electrical systems with power electronics branches.
- Support for standard formats (CGMES and PSSE):
Developer griDigIt, which provides digital, innovative and interoperable tools and solutions, as well as consultancy services for power the system, oversaw integration of compatibility with CGMES and PSSe exchange formats, facilitating the simulation and analysis of power systems.
- Hybrid visualisation and modelling:
Developer Apogea Consulting oversaw development of advanced visualisation tools with maps and hybrid bus-branch and node-breaker modelling.
The implementation of these functionalities has allowed Red Eléctrica to use the open-source software GridCal as an interface for the design and simulation of electrical networks, complementing the package of tools used in national planning analyses.
Furthermore, states Elewit, as an open source software, GridCal allows its development to continue outside the Siroco project, with some providers already considering extending it for their own use and that of other clients.
Additionally, Elewit and Red Eléctrica proposed the use of GridCal in European projects such as TwinEU and InterScada, where it serves as a development platform for new research and development, such as operator assistance with AI or optimal AC-DC power flows.
