Big announcements of major infrastructure projects make good headlines for politicians and are easy to pronounce but not necessarily as easy to implement, writes Guest Editor Jonathan Spencer Jones.
Two studies released days apart in the past week have shed light on the challenges in Great Britain’s recent commitment to outlaw the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered cars and vans by 2030 – a date that had previously been set for 2040 but was brought forward to meet revised emission reduction targets.
One from the House of Lords expressed concerns on the status of the battery supply chain and vehicle manufacturing capacity. The second from the parliamentary Transport Committee addressed the public charging infrastructure requirement and the inadequacy of current provision to meet the projected need or to avoid potential blackouts as EV charging requirements increase.
