E.ON reports 5 million smart meters milestone in GB

E.ON has installed 5 million self-reading smart meters on its path towards meeting the national target of a full rollout by the end of 2025.

The company, the UK subsidiary of the E.ON Group, reports that the meters are giving customers live data on how much energy they are using and what it is costing them at any time.

They also are enabling participation in the new demand flexibility service, which was introduced by National Grid Electricity System Operator to encourage consumers to reduce energy use at peak times during the present winter months.

“We’ve always championed smart meters and the benefits they bring – making it easier for consumers to monitor their costs in near real time and helping them to understand ways to cut their energy use,” says Michael Lewis, chief executive of E.ON UK.

He adds that already thousands of customers are taking part and being rewarded in the demand flexibility service.

In a statement E.ON says that the meter milestone is key to its ambition to help customers better manage their energy, the first step in a sustainable and personalised energy system that brings Britain’s energy market into the 21st century.

The company also notes that with its more than a decade of experience in fitting smart meters for its customers, an installation service is being offered to other suppliers.

GB smart meters

According to the latest quarterly update on smart metering in Britain, at the end of Q3, 30.3 million electricity and gas smart and advanced meters were in place in homes and small businesses, amounting to 54% penetration.

Of these, 26.5 million are operating in smart mode.

During the third quarter over 880,000 units were installed, almost 40,000 up on the previous quarter – and a pace that is expected to continue with binding supplier installation targets and more than 22 million smart meters to be installed over the next three years.

In total there are 28.8 million electricity and 23.8 million gas metering points across Britain.
