DS Smith, a leader in sustainable fibre-based packaging solutions, has partnered with Queen Flowers to develop a recyclable bouquet box aimed at enhancing retail presentation. This innovative packaging is designed to accommodate three to five Kalanchoe bouquets and features dual lid options. The first lid is tailored for smaller bouquets with five holes, while the second caters to larger arrangements with three holes.
The bottom lid integrates with shorter handholes without the need for glue, ensuring ease of assembly. The packaging’s overall design is smooth, avoiding sharp edges, and facilitates construction. The top lid plays a crucial role in minimizing trapped air, thereby reducing unnecessary weight during transport. Additionally, it effectively maintains the moisture levels necessary to keep bouquets fresh from supply chain to Point of Sale (POS).
Emilie Stærmose, Chief Marketing Officer at Queen Flowers, stated, “We wanted a solution that can be easily branded to give us greater exposure in store. This is highly effective in comparison to how our flower bouquets have been traditionally displayed. The moisture retention and protection provided by these new DS Smith boxes is a key aspect of the design planning and strategy, alongside sustainability and recyclability. We are curious to see how this new packaging is received by our customers and their feedback is vital.”
The sustainable packaging is designed to prominently display Queen Flowers’ brand identity, offering an ideal surface for bold logos and making a visual impact both online and in-store. Once emptied, these boxes are easily recyclable, aligning with sustainability goals.
Mette Staal, Cluster Creative Lead at DS Smith, commented, “We applied our unique and industry first Circular Design Metrics when working on this design and our team focused on reducing materials, CO2 emission, and recyclability, for example. The solution is intended to sit beside the brand’s traditional black buckets. We try to understand our customers business and supply chain to find the right packaging solution for their business and consumers.”
DS Smith’s Circular Design Metrics (CDM) tool evaluates packaging designs across eight key indicators, providing a clear measure of circularity. This tool assists brands in driving sustainability by reducing waste and pollution, while extending the lifecycle of materials and products.
DS Smith’s Now & Next sustainability strategy — Redefining Packaging for a Changing World — underscores its commitment to pioneering an industry-wide shift towards a circular economy, delivering sustainable circular solutions for its clientele.
