Dowse Engineering eliminates CNC inconsistencies through innovation

Dowse Engineering enhances CNC precision with advanced metrology tools. The Bletchley-based company has integrated MSP’s technology to address machine inconsistencies, significantly reducing downtime and variability. These steps have not only improved operational efficiency but have also set a new standard in precision manufacturing, particularly in the aerospace and automotive sectors.

Dowse Engineering, a leader in precision and micro-mass production components, has elevated its machine shop’s accuracy by incorporating cutting-edge metrology tools from MSP into three of its 5-axis CNC machines. This move is part of Dowse’s ongoing commitment to investing in precision CNC machining technology to meet tight specifications and critical deadlines across industries such as defence, aerospace, motorsport, and high-end automotive.

In response to a need for enhanced analytics on the shopfloor, Dowse turned to MSP to identify and resolve the root causes of part-to-part variation and inconsistencies across its CNC machines. MSP’s initial assessment indicated potential errors originating from either the probes or the machines themselves.

To address this, MSP introduced its revolutionary AutoClock device, which automatically calibrates the probe to ensure micron-level accuracy, eliminating errors that lead to inconsistencies and subpar production results. By transitioning from manual to automatic probe setup, Dowse Engineering has positioned itself at the forefront of advanced manufacturing operations.

Once probe calibration was secured, MSP employed NC-Checker to evaluate CNC machine performance, revealing inconsistencies and the root causes of variation. The insights gained allowed Dowse to make necessary adjustments, ensuring the production of right-first-time parts. Regular use of NC-Checker has transformed Dowse’s quality control from reactive to proactive.

“NC-Checker has been a game-changer for us,” said Steve Walker, Director at Dowse Engineering. “Having this insight allows us to maintain our high standards and adds extra efficiency to our operations because we can highlight problems faster and rectify them easily.”

Looking ahead, Dowse plans to invest in NC-PartLocator, the final product from MSP’s PerfectPart suite. Steve Walker added, “We’re committed to continuous improvement, and it is important we’re using the right tools that enable us to reach the highest of standards. NC-PartLocator will transform our part location game, automating the process to reduce the time it takes to align our castings parts and make for more accurate machining.”
