DEWA passes 2 million smart electricity and water meter milestone

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) smart electricity and water meters are delivering benefits to customers.

The deployment forms part of DEWA’s efforts to develop a state-of-the-art digital infrastructure, according to a company statement.

DEWA has also started operating the Smart Meters Analysis and Diagnosis Centre, where smart meters are read and monitored remotely every 15 minutes.

“In line with the directives of the wise leadership, we work at DEWA to provide an advanced infrastructure for facility and services management through smart and connected systems that use Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies including artificial intelligence, blockchain, Internet of Things and others,” says Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO.

“In addition to their role in smart transformation and operational efficiency, smart meters provide many benefits to customers and help them monitor, manage and control their consumption proactively and digitally without the need to contact DEWA.”

The deployment is taking place under an integrated strategy for smart grids with investments up to AED 7 billion (US$1.9 billion) through 2035. In addition to the advanced metering infrastructure for electricity and water, other programmes include a focus on asset management and big data.

DEWA’s ‘Smart Applications through Smart Meters and Grids’ initiative is in support of the Smart Dubai initiative to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world.

DEWA reports that over the past three years the smart water metering has helped detect over 0.5 million water leakages and 16,000 defects, saving customers a total of AED 324 million (US$88 million). A High Water Usage Alert service sends instant notifications to customers if an unusual increase in consumption is detected to check internal connections and repair any leaks.

The smart meters are the backbone of the smart grid. With the automated meter readings customers are able to receive near real-time information on their consumption patterns online or on a smartphone app. They also are able to compare their consumption with other households and obtain tariff and other conservation information.

Customers can also make use of ‘DEWA Store’ offers to purchase energy and water saving devices.
