Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced 100% installation of smart water meters with over one million units in place in Dubai.
The rollout was undertaken as part of DEWA’s ongoing efforts to develop its smart grid and state-of-the-art smart meter infrastructure.
With this the aim is to enhance operational efficiency, manage facilities and services through smart and integrated systems using disruptive technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and achieve more savings for DEWA and its customers, a press notice reads.
Commenting, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA said the company attaches special importance to smart meters as the backbone of the smart grid.

“We are committed to realising the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and enhancing leadership, sustainability, and growth based on innovation and future technological applications. This promotes Dubai’s competitiveness and consolidates its leading position as a global hub for the most prosperous digital economy.”
DEWA’s Smart Meters Analysis and Diagnosis Centre monitors the smart meters remotely every 15 minutes, enabling near real-time information on consumption patterns and the prompt detection of water leaks.
For this DEWA developed internally its automated ‘hydro insight’ system for monitoring the smart meters and detecting anomalies within one hour.
The AMI also has led to improved meter reading and billing accuracy and the wider reduction of non-revenue water.
DEWA reports that the smart water metering system and solutions has contributed to reducing water losses from 7.06% at the beginning of 2018 to 4.6% at the end of 2023.
This saved over 47 billion litres of water, equivalent to AED 451.3 million ($123 million).
