Dawn chooses food science undergrad as 2025 student ambassador

Dawn Foods has named its first of three 2025 Student Ambassadors.

Jordan Young, 26, who is studying BSc Food Science at Nottingham Trent University impressed the team at Dawn with his dedication to the technical craft of baking, in-depth knowledge of current bakery trends as well as his understanding of the commercial challenges faced by the industry.

Young started his bakery journey straight from school as an apprentice with Patton’s Bakery in Newtownards, Northern Ireland during which time he secured a bronze award in the Northern Ireland Professional Artisan Baker of the Year in 2018. With a passion for bakery production, Jordan studied first at The School of Artisan Food, in association with Nottingham Trent University, where he was awarded Top FdSC Student in the school in 2024.

During his placement year while at The School of Artisan Food, he taught at Belfast Met Bakery College. In a move to help develop his technical knowledge and skills, Jordan continued at Nottingham Trent University to undertake a BSc Food Science degree.

An ambitious baker, Jordan Young has won many awards including the National Bakery Awards Young Baker of the Year 2023, ABST Danish Pastry Bronze Award Winner and secured bursaries to continue his studies including the 2024 Worshipful Company of Bakers Bursary to attend the Richemont Bakery School in Switzerland.

Dawn’s Student Ambassador programme has been running for eight years and is part of the company’s commitment to nurturing young talent entering the bakery industry. In previous years Dawn selected its Student Ambassadors from University College Birmingham but this year, the company widened the opportunity to all students 18+ undertaking a level 4+ bakery related qualification or undertaking a recognised bakery training programme.

The Student Ambassadors get the chance to work with Dawn’s development team on new recipes. They also create content for the company’s social media platforms as well as blogs for the website and editorial for external media such as British Baker, providing excellent opportunities for students to promote themselves to the wider bakery sector.

Jacqui Passmore, marketing lead West EU & AMEAP at Dawn Foods notes Jordan’s impressive personal achievements in the bakery industry and his passion for his craft.

“But what made his application stand out was his awareness of the latest trends such as nostalgia, free-from and health as well as the challenges that bakers are facing today: HFSS, UPFs, sustainability and fluctuating commodity prices. We are very much looking forward to working with him and creating some exciting new recipes and content.”
