Data shows monthly GB smart meter rollout up 11%
ElectraLink data analysis has indicated that smart meter installations in Great Britain (GB) in May 2022, increased by 11% compared to April.
The operators of Britain’s central energy data transfer function, which was created by the UK’s Electricity Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), states how there were 207,000 installations in May across GB – up on 186,000 in April but 5% less than May 2021.
ElectraLink has stated that while fluctuations between monthly installation rates occur often, suppliers are still under pressure from Ofgem to meet smart meter rollout targets set for 2022, despite shifting customer bases as a result of many Supplier of Last Resort events.
Regions with the highest installation figures for May include East England with 26,000, Southern England with 23,000 and the East Midlands with 20,000. This is on trend with regional figures from the past few years.

These insights were provided by ElectraLink’s data transfer service operations team. The figures represent electricity smart meter installations in GB and the analysis is based on the D0150 data flows transmitted across their network.
Users of the DTS have given ElectraLink permission to intercept and analyse this and other data flows, subject to certain conditions.
Their analysis defines smart meters as those models with the capability to handle time of use tariffs and which can be remotely updated.
For installations after September 2013, the company count all meters flagged as SMETS1, SMETS2 or non-SMETS. For installations before the industry standard designation was agreed, the allocation is based on the make and model of meter.
