CoBank identifies poultry constraints at IPPE

US chicken production is set for a 2% rise. CoBank predicts broiler slaughter will reach 9.4 billion by 2026. Labour issues continue to impact capital decisions despite easing feed costs. Processors are focusing on heavier birds, further processing, and increased dark meat utilisation.


CoBank economist Brian Earnest addressed the Poultry Market Intelligence Forum at the International Production & Processing Expo, highlighting how the US poultry sector is evolving. Instead of new capacity, growth is driven by optimising existing systems.

The labour market, although stabilised at a headline level, still presents constraints, impacting operational efficiency and project viability. Earnest emphasised chicken as the fastest-growing protein in the US, with production set to rise by 2% by 2026, reaching nearly 9.4 billion broilers.
