The world premiere of Midnight in the War Room, a feature-length documentary examining modern cyber conflict from inside the cybersecurity profession, will take place during Black Hat USA 2026 in Las Vegas.
The screening is scheduled for Wednesday, 5 August 2026, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, and will be hosted by Black Hat in partnership with Semperis. Organisers describe the film as the first long-form cyberwar documentary built primarily around the experiences of practitioners, security leaders, and former attackers, rather than external commentators.
Founded in 1997, Black Hat has evolved from a technically focused security research event into one of the industry’s most influential global forums, attracting security engineers, CISOs, policymakers, academics, and technology leaders. That trajectory — from niche technical discipline to board-level and national security concern — underpins the narrative arc of Midnight in the War Room, which charts the escalation of cyber conflict between nation states, criminal groups, and defenders operating under sustained pressure.
According to the producers, the film places particular emphasis on the human and psychological cost of cyber defence, especially for security leaders responsible for protecting critical infrastructure and essential services. It also incorporates perspectives from former attackers, some of whom have served prison sentences, offering insight into adversarial decision-making and motivation alongside frontline defensive experiences.
“For almost 30 years, Black Hat has been the place where the world’s most respected security voices challenge assumptions and push the industry forward,” said Suzy Pallett, President of Black Hat. “Partnering with the producers of Midnight in the War Room for the world premiere of the film builds on that legacy — amplifying the stories of intelligence leaders, CISOs, journalists, victims, and reformed hackers whose work and lived experiences have shaped the conversations on our stages.”

The documentary features contributions from senior figures in cybersecurity and national security, including former US National Cyber Director Chris Inglis, former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Jen Easterly, BBC cyber correspondent Joe Tidy, and cybersecurity educator John Hammond. Additional contributors include retired US Army General and former CIA Director David Petraeus, security researcher Marcus Hutchins, who played a key role in halting the WannaCry ransomware outbreak, and cyber psychologist Professor Mary Aiken, alongside more than 50 practitioners, journalists, and researchers.
Semperis, which produced the film through its in-house studio, positions Midnight in the War Room as a response to what it sees as a gap between the scale of cyber risk and how those risks are publicly understood. The company argues that while cyber incidents increasingly carry national, economic, and societal consequences, the personal burden borne by defenders remains poorly documented.
“This project is unlike anything our industry has seen,” said Thomas LeDuc, Chief Marketing Officer at Semperis and an executive producer of the film. “Cybersecurity is full of powerful, cinematic stories — but, for too long, they’ve gone untold. Midnight in the War Room tells the story of our industry from the inside, through the voices of the CISOs and defenders living it every day, not from the outside looking in.”
Beyond the Black Hat premiere, Semperis plans a programme of private preview screenings and expert panels in partnership with professional and industry bodies, including the Cyber Future Foundation, the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology, (ISC)², and Women in CyberSecurity. These events are intended to support broader discussion around cyber resilience, workforce pressure, and long-term sustainability within the security profession.
The Black Hat premiere places the documentary directly in front of the community it portrays — an audience increasingly tasked with managing cyber risk as a persistent operational reality rather than an episodic technical problem.
