Aspern smart city grid to be modelled with digital twin

As part of its long running Aspern Smart City research demonstration, Siemens software is to develop a digital twin of its low voltage grid.
Siemens is utilising its LV Insights X grid management software for the digital twin, to enable visualisation of the project’s entire low voltage grid in order to identify critical segments, increase the usable capacity of the grid and integrate more renewable energy without additional grid expansion.
The Aspern Smart City Research is located in Aspern Seestadt, a major residential and business future focussed urban development project in the northeast of Vienna.
Siemens has been involved demonstrating new building and grid energy management solutions from the early days of the initiative, which opened in 2013 and is set to house some 25,000 people and provide around 20,000 workspaces.

Electricity sector is the ‘engine of the energy transition’ says Iberdrola CEO
“Generating data driven insights is essential to overcome the growing – and sometimes unpredictable – challenges in the power grid and ensuring efficient and reliable grid operations,” says Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens Grid Software.
“Implementing LV Insights X is the next milestone in our partnership with ASCR, incorporating valuable insights gained from a fruitful collaboration. We are excited to support ASCR in becoming a trailblazer on the path to net zero.”
LV Insights X is an off-the-shelf solution that was launched in June 2023 for low voltage grid management.
Based on existing network data, ASCR can easily create a complete digital twin of its distribution network, as well as plan and operate it much more flexibly with near real-time insights.
The software is anticipated to enable DSOs to reduce outage times by up to 30%.
LV Insights X is part of Siemens Xcelerator, an open digital business platform designed to enable customers to accelerate their digital transformation easier, faster and at scale.
