Arrow Electronics has launched the 10BASE-T1S REF_SPE_T1S reference design board, developed in collaboration with Microchip Technology, Bourns, and Amphenol. This platform is set to streamline the adoption of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) by addressing the crucial magnetic connections that link data to the physical cable. It facilitates comprehensive system-level evaluation of signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and noise immunity in practical industrial settings.
SPE performance hinges on both the physical layer (PHY) and the quality of the magnetic interface. This reference design features Microchip’s LAN8670 10BASE-T1S PHY and Amphenol’s IEC 63171-6 compatible SPE connector. It showcases Bourns’ integrated isolation transformer and common-mode choke (CMC) magnetics, Model SM91081AL, which are pivotal in enhancing the physical layer’s performance.
The board significantly improves common-mode noise rejection and galvanic isolation, particularly at low frequencies. This advancement ensures signal integrity and stable connections in electrically noisy environments such as industrial and building automation sectors.
As industries move away from legacy systems like CAN or RS-485, the demand for robust Ethernet connectivity at the edge, including sensors and actuators, rises. The evaluation board employs an integrated transformer design, offering superior low-frequency noise attenuation and enhanced immunity to conducted and radiated interference. This approach provides a critical error margin against industrial electrical noise and supports improved EMC and emissions performance, helping design engineers meet regulatory compliance efficiently.
The SPE USB-powered platform is ideal for applications in factory automation, HVAC systems, and building controls. It allows engineers to compare transformer-based isolation with capacitor isolation, observe common-mode noise suppression, and evaluate EMC and emissions performance. Arrow offers this tool as a reference schematic solution for new designs, enabling designers to assess network stability in both point-to-point and multidrop 10BASE-T1S configurations before finalising product designs.
Comprehensive technical support and customisation services are available through Arrow’s engineering solutions centre (ESC). The 10BASE-T1S REF_SPE_T1S reference design is currently available through Arrow.
