Ontario-based electric utility and distributor Alectra Utilities is deploying a grid modernisation software suite and metering technology to improve the performance of the distribution grid.

Alectra is deploying Itron’s Gen5 Riva meters, industrial IoT (IIoT) network solution and utility management software suite, Utility IQ, designed to help collect and manage electricity consumption data and enable real-time decision making.

Tech company Itron’s meter technology has distributed intelligence and grid edge capabilities, aiming to enable insights and control for utilities over low and medium-voltage distribution networks.

According to Itron, the tech aims to maximise the benefits of advanced metering infrastructure, allowing utilities to also take advantage of applications such as enhanced outage detection, electric vehicle management and more.

“The decision to renew our end-of-life metering infrastructure comes at an important time when advancements in technology are paving the way for a modernised grid,” said Shelley Parker, vice president of Metering at Alectra.

“Together with Itron, we are preparing to meet the demands of increased electrification, empowering customers to manage their energy requirements and costs, and advancing energy sustainability.”

John Marcolini, senior vice president of Networked Solutions at Itron, added: “Itron’s proven solution gives Alectra the foundation to bring energy innovation to life and enabling grid modernisation and sustainability.”

“Itron’s robust IIoT network combined with its distributed intelligence capabilities enable a new approach to consumer engagement, grid operations and smart city applications – from every single meter.”

Serving more than one million homes and businesses in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe area, Alectra Utilities is the largest municipally-owned electric utility in Canada, based on the total number of customers served.

Alectra further plans to gradually replace its metering infrastructure over the next decade, in hopes of ensuring a seamless transition to the new technology.
