ABB launches Automation Extended for industrial innovation

ABB unveils Automation Extended to modernise control systems. The program leverages existing platforms to integrate advanced analytics, AI, and IoT seamlessly. It ensures operational continuity while introducing scalable digital capabilities, supporting industries facing market volatility, cybersecurity challenges, and regulatory pressures.

ABB has launched the Automation Extended program, an evolution of its distributed control systems (DCS) aimed at industry modernisation without operational disruption. Leveraging ABB’s extensive DCS leadership and expertise in process automation, this initiative facilitates the gradual introduction of advanced capabilities while maintaining system integrity and enhancing flexibility, scalability, and efficiency.

The industrial sector grapples with volatile markets, cybersecurity threats, regulatory demands, and a shifting workforce. Automation Extended addresses these challenges by fostering innovation and agility without disrupting production. It supports advanced analytics and IoT integration, simplifying processes across varying skill levels.

Industry operators can continue using ABB systems like ABB Ability™ System 800xA®, ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus, and ABB Freelance, while gradually integrating new technologies seamlessly. This structured approach to modernisation ensures continuity and fosters innovation.

“In industries we serve, many operating extensive and complex infrastructures, our customers rely on seamless modernisation,” stated Peter Terwiesch, President of ABB’s Automation business area. “Automation Extended delivers future-ready capabilities within familiar systems, emphasising security and interoperability.”

Implemented through a modern, open, and modular framework, the program ensures interoperability and scalability across industrial domains. Adhering to separation of concerns principles, it comprises two securely interconnected environments: a control environment for deterministic process control, and a digital environment for applications and analytics, leveraging AI and machine learning.

A unified automation service approach manages and optimises these environments, employing advancements like the OPC UA backbone and Cloud-Native Architecture. This architecture features containerisation, orchestration, and modular services to enhance processes, optimise maintenance, and streamline engineering across diverse hardware platforms.

Automation Extended will be available in upcoming releases of ABB Ability™ System 800xA®, ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus, and ABB Freelance. More information can be found at go.abb/automation.
