Havyard to develop hydrogen cargo vessel for European client
An as yet undisclosed European shipping line has contracted Norwegian ship designer Havyard to develop a new concept for emission-free cargo transport.
According to Havyard, its existing hydrogen experience and work on zero-emission vessels, in addition to an in-house suite of advanced simulation tools for developing energy-efficient solutions, were important contributors to the deal. According to Lars Conradi Andersen, VP sales, through this pilot project the company will be able to combine these elements to deliver a final design.

“The framework for this contract is to develop a ship that uses hydrogen-based fuel as its primary energy source while giving the client an effective and safe ship,” he said. “The goal is to design a large ship that can sail longer distances with zero emissions.”
Havyard recently established a separate company, Havyard Hydrogen, as a spin-off of the company’s R&D work in the area of hydrogen propulsion for large vessels. EVP of Havyard Hydrogen, Kristian Osnes, says the team is excited about the contract as it shows the company’s green transition work has been noticed in the European market.
“This is precisely the type of project that we need to expand the portfolio of zero-emission solutions into new ship segments,” he commented.
