Triumph Subsea Services to supply Hybrid FDVs
Croatia-based Triumph Subsea Services has secured a contract with Brodosplit JSC to supply one of its Field Development Vessels with an option for three further vessels.
The initial vessel is to be named FDV Chronos with steel cutting expected to commence in March/April 2021, and delivery due in Q4 2023. The vessels will be built and outfitted entirely at DIV Shipbuilding Group’s Brodosplit facility in Split, Croatia. The company claims that the FDV Chronos and her sister ships will be the most advanced, net-zero compliant, multi-purpose offshore construction vessels currently available on the market.

The vessels will feature hybrid propulsion employing a total of seven generators, consisting of a pair of 5,400kW and four 3,600kW units, with a 500kW backup genset. Two 3,000kWh batteries are also fitted alongside a 2,000kWh hydrogen fuel cell coupled to a 14 x 40ft hydrogen storage tank. Propulsion will be provided by three 5,000kW aft azimuth thrusters, two 3,000kW bow tunnel thrusters and two 3,000kW retractable bow azimuth thrusters.
The energy efficient nature of the propulsion system means that running at 9.5kts, claimed fuel consumption will be kept to 23 metric tons per day, while at full speed (16kts) consumption increases to 75 metric tons per day.
The company states that FDV Chronos and her sisters represent a turnkey solution for nearly all subsea construction tasks that may be encountered within the offshore oil and gas, subsea telecoms, decommissioning and renewables markets. It reinforces that its goal is to build and be operating a net-zero fleet by 2035, and feel this target could well be met by 2030.
