Government-backed £30M investment to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport

The UK Government has thrown its support behind the South Yorkshire Mayor’s ambitious plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), marking a landmark moment for infrastructure investment in the North. A £30M injection of devolved funding has been confirmed to unlock the site’s redevelopment, with huge implications for regional growth and the wider supply chain.
The move represents a pivotal opportunity for UK infrastructure suppliers, as the creation of a sustainable aviation hub is set to generate demand across construction, engineering, transport, utilities, and sustainable technologies. The plans forecast up to 5,000 new jobs and £5Bn in economic value by 2050, with an additional £2Bn in wider regional benefits.
A new government-backed working group has also been launched to support the project, bringing together the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Doncaster Council, and central government officials. Their goal: to ensure the smooth reopening of DSA and to explore how it can act as a catalyst for long-term infrastructure growth across Yorkshire.
Mayor Oliver Coppard hailed the investment as a “vital signal of our shared commitment” to regional growth and sustainable aviation. “Since day one, we’ve fought for our airport. Now, with government support, we can create skilled jobs, pioneer green technologies, and help transform South Yorkshire into a hub for the industries of tomorrow,” he said.
The funding announcement aligns with broader devolution plans outlined by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who is spearheading Local Growth Plans across England. These plans aim to tap into local expertise and align national resources to fuel productivity and employment. Infrastructure and construction firms are expected to play a central role as regions like South Yorkshire set out their long-term investment priorities.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the initiative as a key example of the government’s “Plan for Change,” reaffirming Whitehall’s commitment to regional prosperity: “I’m thrilled to see devolved funding being used to revitalise this key asset for South Yorkshire, and I look forward to the first flights taking to the sky.”
As regions across the UK outline bold new agendas—from transport integration in the North East to housing in Liverpool—the reopening of DSA stands out as a shovel-ready project that can galvanise private investment and unlock fresh opportunities for infrastructure suppliers nationwide.
With Doncaster Sheffield Airport poised for takeoff once more, the focus now shifts to the delivery phase—one in which the UK’s construction and infrastructure sector will be integral.
