Skretting, a specialist in the manufacture and supply of aquaculture feeds, has entered a 15-year agreement with Vertom and Strand Shipping for the lease of four diesel-electric vessels. According to the partners, most of the vessels are scheduled to be delivered in 2026.

Sustainable features

The newly designed vessels feature energy-efficient hulls and a diesel-electric, multi-fuel propulsion system. This configuration is expected to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 30% compared to conventional systems.

Over the past year, the three partners have worked closely to develop and optimize this solution. Their collaborative efforts, facilitated by logistics partner Kuehne + Nagel, have resulted in a “shipping strategy that balances environmental goals with performance and efficiency”, the partners say.

Each vessel will be equipped with a range of sustainable technologies that contribute to reducing emissions and improving efficiency. These include biofuel capabilities for cleaner energy use and shore-power connections that enable the vessels to cut emissions during port operations.

Where feasible, wind-assisted propulsion (WAPS) will be integrated to further reduce fuel consumption. The vessels will also feature several other decarbonization measures aimed at enhancing overall environmental performance. Together, these solutions are expected to lower the environmental impact of Skretting’s logistics operations, while maintaining high standards of performance and reliability.

Partnership agreement

This collaboration aims to streamline the import of raw materials while reducing the environmental footprint of Skretting’s supply chain. Vertom, the vessel owner, will oversee the construction of four diesel-electric vessels, integrating multiple sustainable add-ons. Strand Shipping, with its operational knowledge and presence in the Scandinavian market, will manage the day-to-day operation of the fleet.

In related news, Thecla Bodewes Shipyards recently christened and launched the MV Vertom Joyce. The eighth vessel in the Labrax series is a multipurpose dry cargo vessel that features an advanced diesel-electric propulsion system. Click here to read the full story.
