Alliander to accelerate flexibility management in the Netherlands

Alliander is to implement Siemens’ Gridscale X platform to tackle key distribution grid management challenges.

In particular, Alliander, a major network company in the Netherlands, intends to use the platform to reduce grid congestion and increase grid utilisation.

With this, the country’s grid usage is anticipated to be extended by 10 to 30%.

“We in the Netherlands have major congestion challenges to connect our customers and flexibility is a major strategy for us and so it’s great to have this partnership to work on this with a platform that is open and available,” said Daan Schut, Chief Transition Officer at Alliander and a member of its board, at the launch, which took place at Enlit Europe.

Alliander distributes electricity and gas in the Netherlands, serving approximately 3.5 million customers.

With more than half of the country’s energy now coming from renewable sources and increasing customer demand with waiting lists up to 10 years, ensuring reliable energy supply and grid stability is essential.

Flexibility is crucial to address these challenges, as it can help identify which grid segments require capacity upgrades, and which can be managed by flexibility, optimising resource allocation, and reducing unnecessary costs, to connect customers faster.

Gridscale X is designed as an open digital platform, aimed to support a growing number of use cases.

Alliander intends to use Gridscale X LV Insights, which is intended to support DSOs to create a valid, ready-to-use digital twin of the physical grid, serving as a single source of truth.

Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO of Siemens Grid Software, said flexibility management is vital in making it possible to efficiently integrate renewable energy sources and meet the evolving demands of the modern energy system.

“That is why we are delighted to combine forces with a key ecosystem partner such as Alliander. Using our Gridscale X platform, they will be able to increase their flexibility management capabilities and scale their customer satisfaction.”
