Servo motors growing smarter and more efficient

Siboni and CoreTigo have announced the next step in their collaboration, bringing CoreTigo’s IO-Link wireless technology to Siboni’s servo motors.

The integration has resulted in the development of the PL4 series, a new line of wireless, planetary gearbox, brushless motors with electronic drives. These motors are not only highly energy-efficient but also provide exceptional control precision, making them ideal for a wide range of industrial applications.

The integration of CoreTigo’s TigoAir 2 system-on-module into Siboni’s servo motors represents a significant leap forward in intelligent motion control. This advancement allows industrial professionals to access mission-critical data in real-time, helping maintain optimized production lines. The IO-Link Wireless-enabled motors are designed for applications such as packaging machines, rotary tables, industrial robotics, logistics, automated guided vehicles (AGVs and LGVs), and smart transport tracks.

Key features of the PL4 series

The PL4 series of servo motors offer several advantages, thanks to the integration of IO-Link Wireless technology:

Real-time wireless control: the motors offer cable-free control, reducing deployment and maintenance complexity while increasing flexibility. With a 5ms latency, the system delivers the performance of a wired industrial-grade connection without the need for cables.

Advanced SENSING CAPABILITIES: AS motors rotate continuously in industrial environments, monitoring their performance is crucial. With IO-Link Wireless, real-time data from sensors (e.g., temperature, vibrations, humidity) can be transmitted and analysed without halting the production line. This enables predictive maintenance and operational optimisation.

Seamless integration with automation systems: by eliminating the need for complex wiring, IO-Link Wireless ensures easy integration with various industrial communication protocols, including PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, and OPC UA.

Efficient data management: the PL4 motors incorporate pre-processing algorithms that reduce data payload, transmitting only essential information to the PLC. This prevents traffic overload while ensuring full data flow from the IO-Link Wireless Master to cloud and enterprise systems for further aggregation and analysis.

Comprehensive analytics: standard statistical algorithms such as RMS, Variance, Kurtosis, and FFT can be easily implemented, providing advanced insights and analytics to improve performance.

How the PL4 series works

The PL4 series integrates an IO-Link Wireless system-on-module directly into the servomotor, enabling communication with the IO-Link Wireless Master at the field level. At the control level, the Master communicates with the PLC using a variety of Industrial Ethernet protocols, as well as with enterprise applications via the TigoEngine software platform. This system enables full visibility and control, from the factory floor to the top of the organisation.

Additional benefits of IO-Link wireless integration:

  • Simplified installation with fewer complexities
  • Increased flexibility in installation and configuration
  • Reduced maintenance due to fewer cables
  • Easy future expansion with multiple IOs

Showcasing innovation at SPS Italia and beyond

Siboni and CoreTigo recently demonstrated the capabilities of the PL4 series at the SPS Italia 2024 expo, highlighting their joint efforts to meet the growing demand for flexible, reliable, and efficient automation solutions. At the event, CoreTigo and its partners presented advanced applications enabled by IO-Link Wireless, while Siboni focused on the practical applications of their servomotors in complex industrial settings, showcasing their role in advancing Industry 4.0.

For those who missed the initial demonstration, Siboni will showcase the PL4 series live again at SPS 2024 in Germany, in Hall 1, Booth 249, as part of CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless Ecosystem. Visitors are encouraged to stop by between 12th and 14th November at the Nuremberg Messe to experience these cutting-edge solutions firsthand.
