Milan, Italy-based Prysmian has been selected by Spanish TSO Red Eléctrica to commission an HVDC connection between the island of Mallorca and the Spanish mainland power grid.

Prysmian, a globally operating cable manufacturer, has received a Letter of Award for the second Baleares Peninsula energy transmission project.

According to Prysmian in a release, the value of the project is expected to exceed €0.5 billion ($540.5 million).

Under the contract, Prysmian will be responsible for the design, installation, testing and commissioning of two high voltage direct current (HVDC) 250kV MI single-core cables, which will connect the island of Mallorca with the Spanish mainland power grid, covering both the submarine and land section.

They will also be responsible for a fibre optic cable for telecom and monitoring purposes.

This project will reinforce the quality and security of the Balearic Islands’ electricity supply and will ensure coverage of the demand on the islands.

The announcement follows on Prysmian’s previous work with the Spanish TSO and on the Spanish Peninsula Balearas 1 installation, the technology from which will be reused for this second installation.

Commenting in a release was Hakan Ozmen, EVP of transmission at Prysmian, who said: “Prysmian has strengthened its leading role in development interconnections thanks to the second Baleares Peninsula project, as we continue to enable increasingly efficient and sustainable power transmission grids in the Mediterranean area.”

“We will carry out this project using the same consolidated MI cable technology which was previously deployed in the Peninsula Baleares 1 installation, and the letter of award also reflects the continued long-lasting relationship with Red Electrica, as Prysmian had previously been awarded projects including the Ibiza-Formentera, Lanzarote-Fuerteventura, Tenerife –La Gomera and Ceuta-Peninsula connections in recent years.”

Prysmian and Red Eléctrica will hold an exclusive negotiation of the contract, with the signing expected by the end of 2024.
