Revamped Nokia software to reduce data centre power consumption for CSPs

Nokia has announced a revamp of energy efficiency software to include algorithms to automatically shut down otherwise idling equipment, hoping to reduce power consumption for CSPs in network assets, including data centres, and across their networks.

Nokia is upgrading its AVA Energy efficiency software, aiming to expand its scope with enhanced algorithms and power saving measures to help Communication Service Providers (CSPs) reduce electricity consumption.

Using improved Machine Learning (ML) and AI algorithms, according to Nokia, the enhanced tool enables CSPs to lower power consumption in their data centres, in addition to network base stations, batteries and air conditioning units in telco networks.

The telco giant, which has recently undergone a rebranding into a digital tech provider, touts the multi-vendor software tool’s ability to help realise reduced power usage of up to 30%, up about 10 percentage points relative to the original software, based on customer testing.

The enhanced tool will allow operators to shut down idling and unused equipment automatically through the algorithms, with the option to completely disconnect hardware through remote power control modules.

According to recent research from Analysys Mason, AI-based software solutions offer CSPs the opportunity to implement energy-saving measures as soon as possible.

According to their paper, Controlling energy use: the role of AI-based solutions, measures to reduce energy consumption can address all elements of the network and can be grouped into four categories: network modernisation, intelligent power-saving features, efficient use of assets and alternative ways of sourcing energy.

Michela Venturelli, senior analyst, at Analysys Mason, said: “Efficient energy consumption is an increasingly important aspect of network operations.

“CSPs recognise it as being a strategic imperative for their business and they want tools that will meaningfully help meeting increased network customer demands while lowering energy consumption. This latest Nokia AVA Energy efficiency solution is a solid contribution to those ends.”
