Testing, inspection and certification company Bureau Veritas has released a biofuel-ready notation to support the wider deployment of biofuels within the maritime shipping sector.

BV’s notation is designed to help the sector address several challenges associated with the use of biofuels or biofuel blends, such as ensuring a high level of safety and environmental compliance.

The notation outlines requirements and a comprehensive methodology for the required documentation and testing while also considering the fuel’s technical specifications. The biofuel-ready notation certifies that a new or existing vessel has met the required conditions to use biofuel. If applicable, this includes any testing for NOX  emissions being completed successfully.

The latest notation was developed in partnership with several maritime stakeholders, shipowners and engine manufacturers.
