Tackling the energy transition with technology and talent

The energy transition is exciting, but it won’t be easy – especially for network operators. For them, the transition brings new expectations from customers and investors, and serious disruption across a value chain that’s getting more complex.

Dealing with these changes calls for a dynamic approach to network management – a worry for an industry built on stability. For those bold enough to change, though, there are new opportunities where generation, grid management, and demand intersect.

One way for utilities across the value chain to find these potential sources of value is through digitization. Creating a layered service stack that includes hardware and software frameworks can create a host of new services and solutions.

Seeing system strength clearly

Trying to bring renewables onto the grid is a good example of changing demand and the complexity it can cause.

To an outsider, switching from fossil fuels to renewables is a straight swap. But it’s a tricky process.

One issue is that replacing traditional generation with renewables reduces the “parachute” of system strength: the power system’s ability to maintain the correct voltage waveforms (high system strength improves the grid’s resilience to disturbances).

It’s such a critical concern that many DSOs choose not to add renewable capacity because their existing models have overly simplistic assumptions about the risk posed by the new connection.

Reactive Technologies’ (part of Accenture’s Venture’s interest) Grid Sonar technology removes that risk. It works like sonar: pulses are sent through the system to measure system strength in real-time. The result is that operators are empowered with the data they need to make informed, confident choices – just by adding a small digital device to their network.

That’s just one way in which technology can empower DSOs to deliver the energy transition. But it’s not just a question of technology.

4 steps to ignite innovation

Emerging technologies are essential for driving the energy transition, but it’s not as easy as just switching on a group of gadgets.

Although every DSO faces different challenges, I believe there are 4 fundamental steps that can turn the obstacles ahead into opportunities.

Firstly, it is critical to work with regulators to develop a regulatory model that drives innovation. Laws that inspire rather than restrict innovative technologies must be in place if the industry is to change.

Secondly, it is important to be open to innovation. Utilities are full of the best and brightest, but solving new challenges calls for a fresh perspective. Teaming up with partners, customers, venture capital accelerators, start-ups, and universities will help.

Thirdly, remember that digitalization is never “done”. Technology constantly presents new opportunities to accelerate digital transformation.

Lastly, but most importantly, it is essential to redefine the employee experience. Technology is powerless without the right talent. Any transition-based change must prioritize the re-skilling of your employees, which will also make your organization more appealing to potential hires.

There are challenges ahead, and it is an uncertain time. But, thanks to technology, I believe that utilities are well placed to take charge of the energy transition and empower other industries to build truly sustainable businesses.
