Canada’s PEI Energy Corp selects Ameresco for smart microgrid development

PEI Energy Corp, an energy infrastructure developer and manager on Prince Edward Island in Canada, has selected cleantech integrator Ameresco for the construction of a microgrid to ensure energy security and decarbonisation.

Prince Edward Island Energy Corporation (PEI) is using federal funding secured via Natural Resources Canada’s Smart Grid Programme to develop the Slemon Park Microgrid.

The system comprises a 10MW solar generator which is being coupled with an onsite energy storage system and distributed residential storage plants.

The integrated system will enable renewable energy storage for later use to ensure grid reliability during times when demand is high and generation low.

The project was kickstarted in December 2021 and is expected to be operational during the fall of 2022.

Steven Myers, Mister of Environment, Energy and Climate Action said: “The Slemon Park Microgrid project will further our goal of achieving Net Zero energy by 2030 on Prince Edward Island. With the addition of a new, clean renewable energy grid, we’ll be able to better reduce our baseline greenhouse gas emissions and create a more resilient future.”

The microgrid is expected to avoid the emissions of 4500 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum.
