ENGIE wins contract with Berlin district for distributed energy

German utility ENGIE is partnering with GASAG to deliver a low-carbon smart initiative in the district of Spandau, northwest of Berlin.

The two have won a contract to deliver ‘The New Gartenfeld’ project to install distributed energy, smart mobility, as well as digital infrastructure and technologies.

District heating plants and heat pumps, renewable energy including solar PV on rooftops and electric vehicle charging systems will be installed to convert a former cable factory site into a sustainable district of the future.

More than 3,700 apartments, 600 business premises, communal areas and facilities are currently under construction on the 31-hectare site. Residents are set to increase to 10,000 by 2029 with the project preparing the district for the growth.

The aim of the project is to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions whilst preparing to meet next-generation customer demands and business models such as smart mobility, energy, homes and heating.

“The New Gartenfeld” will abate 1,100 metric tons of CO2 annually, 10 years ahead of Germany’s climate targets for districts and cities, according to the statement.

The 20-year contract includes ENGIE and GASAG preparing the district for the emergence and use of hydrogen and real-time management of parking spaces, energy and e-mobility using digital tools.

The contract is in line with ENGIE’s goal of accelerating the energy transition and helping Germany to achieve its sustainability goals.

Cécile Prévieu, ENGIE’s Executive Vice President in charge of energy solutions activities, said distributed energy infrastructure solutions in support of low-carbon districts and cities will lead the transition to a carbon-neutral economy.
